Our Words Create Our Future

August 31, 2009

By Larry Barkan

I was recently coaching a person who told me that he would “try” to improve his relationship with a coworker but that it would be “very difficult” and that it would “take a lot of time to trust him.”

Consider the words that are in bold above. Could it be that while this person thinks he’s merely describing the future, he’s actually creating it? Could it be that our words actually produce results in the real world?

Consider these examples:

I was recently reading about Lanny Bassham, a former Olympic rifle shooter and “mental coach” whose clients include U.S. Olympic archers. Bassham notes that the archery community has a peculiar obsession with “target panic,” which refers to a malady sometimes suffered by champion archers who become so worried about hitting the target that they stop themselves from even attempting a shot.

Bassham says that, “the words ‘target panic’ have induced an unnecessary amount of severity and concern about this condition among archers.” He concludes by noting that, “I think if they had a better word for it, they’d have a lot less problem trying to cure it.” (I’ve bolded those words for emphasis).

In his book, The Perfect Mile, Neal Bascomb writes that, “On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister became the first man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes, a barrier many experts had long considered unbreakable. What is remarkable is that Australia’s John Landy and New Zealand’s Peter Snell bettered his record that same year. Roger’s feat changed the thinking of people in countries all over the world.” (I’ve bolded those words for emphasis).

What do these examples have in common? They all suggest that the key to unlocking our chains lies in the words we use to describe our world.

Consider the possibility that if you want to know what stops someone from achieving a goal, listen to how the goal is described. Could it be that describing a goal as “difficult,” “strenuous,” or “tough” creates those outcomes and that talking about a goal as “achievable,” “exciting,” or “inspiring” creates outcomes that conform to those descriptions?

Isn’t it amazing how we can predict the future? Or, perhaps, not so amazing. Perhaps the process is quite straightforward: We predict how the future will occur when we describe that future and then, naturally, live out that prediction.

Or, as ancient wisdom has noted, “Be careful what you wish for. You may get it.”

Your Success Depends On Your Motivation

No matter where life takes us, we all need to be positively motivated in order to succeed. This is particularly true when things are not quite going our way and when we have undertaken business projects that do not seem to work out as we would have expected. It is at this point that fear can move stealthily into our way of thinking and a little irritating voice says that this is not going to work.

So, what can be done? Well, for the most part, it is important that you steer clear of negative people. These people can, at times, be your own flesh and blood. However, this is not the time to disclose any doubts and fears that you may have in them. Positive and enthusiastic people should be sought out from your acquaintances, family and friends. Assume the positive and confident outlooks on life that they have. Locate a good motivational book. Return and re-tackle the issues that are holding your scheme back, whilst you are thinking about success. It is very often a case of needing to tweak certain aspects of the operation in order to get it moving.

If research has been undertaken by yourself correctly, then there must be a reason as to why things are not going so well. Determination will pay in the long run. If you are yearning to succeed, this will without a doubt provide the inspiration and energy that is required to get you off on the right foot and where you need to go. This is personal motivation in action. Positive results will be achieved when your energy and desire work together.

When things are not going your way, it is easy for you to become down and depressed. It is simple to just give up and give in to fear and misery. However, it is this approach that leads you to less success. Depression and loss of motivation can be increased when communicating with unenthusiastic people. In a sense, we are in actual fact what we deem ourselves to be, and we need to motivate ourselves in order to achieve.

In one way, it is more difficult to remain positive since is requires a great deal of energy. However, on the other hand, being negative takes your energy away, whilst being positive will produce energy. Motivation is produced when we remain positive, and results are produced from enthusiastic motivation. Nothing is a lost cause. It is just necessary to undertake thoughtful restructuring in the worst cases, or minor tweaking at best. All that is required to carry this out is the motivation and enthusiasm.

Life can be difficult. However it is imperative that you search for the positives in everything, including situations that prove to be difficult. It is important that you enjoy life and mix with positive, energetic people. It is simple for their enthusiasm and motivation to break through the shell of depression that is blocking up your life. Goals need to be developed, followed by you gaining the amount of motivation needed to drive in your life.

How To Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

January 9, 2008

by Bridgette Boudreaux

The New Year is here and so are your resolutions for the year. As you review your list, observe how many times you’ve transferred the same resolutions into the New Year with a promise that this year you will keep them. Make a real difference this year, don’t commit to keeping your new resolutions; commit to achieving your new resolutions. Implement the following guidelines and you will be on your way to accomplishing your goals once and for all.

Set Realistic Measurable Goals
Setting realistic attainable goals that are measurable is an important key to achieving goals successfully. If you set goals that are unrealistic and are impossible to accomplish within 12 months, you will be setting yourself up for failure which will lead to disappointment and a lack of motivation to conquer any goals. Goals must be measurable so you will know how much you have accomplished or need to accomplish to achieve your goals. For example, losing weight is a popular resolution; so if losing weight is your goal this year and you lose one pound in January, I guess you’ve met your goal; but would you be happy with the results? Probably Not! However setting a measurable goal to lose 20 lbs. and walk 30 minutes daily will allow you to track your progress and allocate tasks to reach your desired outcome.

Write It Down
Take it out of your head and put it on paper. Writing down your goals makes them real as oppose to dreaming about doing them sometime in the future. Written goals are specific and concrete and it allows you to create steps to reaching your goals. Your written goals should be placed where you can see them consistently. Post them on your wall, on the refrigerator, in your wallet or in your journal, do not put them in a drawer or notebook where they will be forgotten. Seeing your written goals will serve as a reminder to your commitment to attain your goals.

Take Action Consistently
You’ve decided what you want to accomplish, your goals are specific, realistic, measurable and written down, What’s Next? You must now take action, consistently. Start today with one task and continue to complete the task consistently even if you do not see immediate results. Your desired results will began to take form with consistent, persistent action. Consistent action becomes habit and it will become a part of your routine effortlessly.

Visualize The Desired Outcome Daily
Take a few minutes daily to visualize the desired outcome of your goal. Create a mental picture of what emotions you will experience once your goal is met. If your goal is earn a six figure income this year, visualize your bank account statement displaying $100,000.00 profit. What does it feel like? Your mental pictures will one day become your reality and you will be prepared for its arrival.

Celebrate Your Efforts
You don’t have to wait until you lose 20lbs to celebrate your success. Celebrate the completion of daily tasks. If you complete a 30 minute walk today and didn’t eat the usual late night snack, celebrate. Any tasks completed, self-discipline exercised or time taken to visualize your desired outcome will bring you closer to your goals than you were the day before so celebrate.

Start Over If You Get Off Track
If you get off track (hey, we all do), do not use this an excuse to stop pursuing your goals. Forgive yourself, determine what caused you to derail, improve the circumstances and start over again. Don’t become paralyzed with past mistakes, or lack of self-discipline, just keep moving. Each day is a new day to work towards your goals and get closer to achieving your dreams, so don’t let one day pass without taking full advantage of the opportunity to become better than the day before.
